A Newspaper Wedding Announcements Checklist

So now you're a married couple settling into your new life after the honeymoon. It is probably a good time to send out an announcement to let people know you have tied the knot.

Many new couples find that a newspaper wedding announcement does the trick, while others choose to send out individual wedding announcements to their network of friends, family and colleagues. Placing newspaper wedding announcements is a fairly simply thing and the best method is to consider which newspaper has the highest circulation.

Some newspapers only allow a notice in text while others welcome an image of the happy couple to accompany the notice.

Depending on your budget, you may choose to include additional information in your newspaper wedding announcements such as your grandparent’s names or the attendant’s names. This is really a personal preference.

There is an accepted standard format for nearly all newspaper wedding announcements which you will want to have on hand when you call to place your notice or when you log-in to the newspaper website to complete their online wedding announcement form.
This includes:

  • Bride’s name before marriage
  • Groom’s name
  • Parent’s names
  • Date of the wedding
  • Wedding venue
  • Matron or maid of honor's name
  • Matron or maid of honor's hometown
  • Bridesmaids and their hometowns
  • Best man and his hometown
  • Reception was held at
  • Honeymoon destination
  • The newlyweds are now residing in
  • Your contact information for the newspaper office to confirm your announcement

In placing the call for your announcement you’ll want to inquire about what day of the week your notice will appear. Most newspaper wedding announcements appear on the weekend, notably Saturday and Sunday. This is good in terms of exposure for your notice because more people buy more papers on the weekend.

It is a good idea to purchase several copies of the newspaper in which your wedding announcement is placed. In years to come it will be one of the many keepsakes that you will treasure of your wedding and the beginning of your new life together.
